The Recycling Reality in Airbnbs or Short-Term Rentals
If you have an Airbnb or VRBO rental in an area that you don't live in, make sure you check the garbage and recycling rules, and especially note it for your cleaners. I write this because we were recently fined after guests didn't tell us they had thrown recycling away, and put it in the wrong place!
Remember that recycling guidelines vary by city or county, and what's recyclable in one area may not be in another. This can create issues for you, as guests are almost always unaware of local rules, and while trying to help, they can dispose of trash and recycling the wrong way. While some guests are helpful, many don't do any sort of recycling at all, which can lead to issues for you if there's local rules. Having clear instructions on what to throw out where, can avoid confusion (especially for international travelers). It's a good reminder that recyclables mixed with trash usually go straight to the landfill.
Why Does This Matter for Hosts?
- Fines for improper disposal can fall on the property owner or manager.
- Clean, well-labeled recycling can reduce your waste bill over time.
- Sustainability is a selling point, and eco-conscious guests often prefer eco-friendly properties.
- Trash issues can result in HOA complaints or city violations.
How Can You Avoid Issues?
- Post clear signage in kitchens and near bins with local do's and don'ts.
- Use color-coded or labeled bins to make sorting easy and intuitive.
- Include recycling info in your welcome guide or check-in message.
- Note the schedule for trash and recycling pickups to avoid overflow.
- Provide starter supplies like recycling bags or liners.
- Train your cleaning crew to report misuse or contamination.
